Coffee Roastery SEO Case Study

From 1,450 monthly visitors to 9,800 in 7 months – see how we scaled organic growth

Project Overview

A small-batch specialty coffee roastery based in Portland, Oregon, with an online store and a single café location. The business focuses on single-origin beans, fresh roasting, and direct-to-consumer sales. The main goal of the SEO project was to increase organic traffic to the e-commerce site, improve visibility for high-intent keywords, and drive more online orders while supporting local foot traffic. Before the project, most sales came from farmers’ markets and limited local marketing. The client wanted sustainable growth without heavy reliance on paid ads.

From the Client

We were roasting great coffee but almost invisible online. Our website got very little traffic, and we were buried under big chain competitors. We needed to reach coffee enthusiasts searching for quality beans without spending thousands on ads every month.

The Challenge

The roastery faced several issues: the website had thin product pages, poor mobile performance, and almost no content to attract searchers. Main money keywords like “fresh roasted coffee beans,” “single origin coffee online,” and “specialty coffee subscription” showed rankings below position 50. Organic traffic was stuck at around 1,450 visits per month, with very low conversion rates (under 0.8%). Technical problems including slow page speed and missing schema markup further hurt performance. Local competition from established roasters and national players made ranking difficult without a clear strategy.

The Results

  • Organic Traffic: Increased from 1,450 to 9,800 monthly visitors
  • Keyword Rankings: 47 keywords reached top 10 positions (including 12 in top 3)
  • Leads from Organic Traffic: 312 qualified leads (email sign-ups and contact forms)
  • Domain Authority: Improved from 18 to 41
  • High-Quality Backlinks: Acquired 87 relevant backlinks from coffee blogs, industry directories, and local food publications

The Solution

We began with a full technical audit and on-page optimization. Product pages were rewritten with proper keyword research, detailed tasting notes, origin stories, and brewing guides. Schema markup was added for products and reviews to improve rich snippets in search results.

A content strategy was built around educational blog posts targeting long-tail keywords such as “best coffee beans for pour over” and “how to store roasted coffee beans.” This helped attract traffic higher in the buying funnel and established the roastery as an authority.

Local SEO was strengthened with optimized Google Business Profile, consistent NAP citations, and outreach to coffee-focused websites for natural backlinks. We also implemented a simple subscription landing page optimized for conversions.

Search Engine Optimization Journey

The project followed a 7-month timeline. Months 1-2 focused on technical fixes and on-page SEO. Months 3-5 emphasized content creation and internal linking. Months 6-7 concentrated on link building and local SEO. Traffic growth was gradual at first, then accelerated in months 4-7 as content gained traction and rankings improved. Regular performance reports helped the client understand progress and make small adjustments to product offerings based on search data.

Client Investment & ROI

The client invested $950 per month in SEO services, totaling $6,650 over 7 months. During this period, the roastery generated approximately 4.2x return through additional organic revenue.

ROI Breakdown:

  • SEO Investment: $6,650 (7 months)
  • Additional Online Orders: 680 orders attributed to organic search
  • Estimated Additional Revenue: $28,200 (at average order value of $41.50)
  • Return on Investment: 4.2x

Key Insight: Unlike paid ads that stop delivering the moment spending ends, SEO built a growing asset that continues to drive traffic and sales while strengthening the brand’s online presence.
