College Website SEO Case Study

From 4,200 monthly visitors to 26,500 in 9 months – see how we scaled organic growth

Project Overview

Our client is a private, mid-sized college offering undergraduate and professional certificate programs, competing against both larger state universities and other private institutions for prospective student attention. Their admissions team relied heavily on paid search and third-party lead-gen sites for inquiry volume, both of which came with rising cost-per-lead and inconsistent lead quality. The goal of the SEO project was to build organic visibility around program-specific and “near me” search terms prospective students actually use, reducing dependence on paid channels while improving the quality of inbound admissions inquiries.

From the Client

“Our cost per lead through paid ads kept climbing every enrollment cycle, and a lot of those leads never even responded to outreach. We wanted students finding us because they searched for our specific programs, not because we outbid another school on a keyword that week.”

The Challenge

The college’s site had over 400 pages but almost no structure around search intent — program pages competed with blog posts and news articles for the same keywords. Only 22 keywords ranked in the top 100, mostly branded terms. Domain Authority was 31, respectable for the .edu domain but underutilized, with backlinks concentrated on a handful of old press mentions. Program pages lacked information prospective students search for directly, like tuition, program length, and accreditation. Meanwhile, three regional competitor colleges outranked them for nearly every “[program name] degree near me” search.

The Results

  • Organic Traffic: 4,200 → 26,500 monthly visitors (6.3x increase)
  • Keyword Rankings: 22 keywords in top 100 → 210 keywords in top 10, including first-page rankings for 14 of 18 core degree programs
  • Leads from Organic Traffic: 18 inquiries/month → 145 inquiries/month
  • Domain Authority: 31 → 46
  • High-Quality Backlinks: 34 → 112 (from education directories, local news coverage, and partnerships with regional employers and high schools)

The Solution

We rebuilt each degree and certificate program page around the specific questions prospective students search for — tuition, program length, career outcomes, and accreditation — replacing thin, marketing-style copy with the practical information competitors were already ranking on.

We restructured the site’s internal architecture to separate program pages, admissions content, and blog content into distinct search-intent clusters, eliminating internal keyword cannibalization that had been splitting ranking signals across dozens of overlapping pages.

We built a targeted local and education-sector link campaign, securing coverage from regional news outlets, partnerships with feeder high schools, and listings in accredited education directories, strengthening topical authority the .edu domain hadn’t been leveraging.

Search Engine Optimization Journey

The first three months focused on program page rebuilds and fixing internal keyword cannibalization, with modest traffic gains as pages were recrawled and reindexed. By month 4, program pages began climbing for competitive degree-related searches, and inquiry volume started rising. Months 5–9 saw compounding growth as backlinks matured and the site’s authority strengthened across nearly every program cluster, with organic search becoming the admissions team’s largest inquiry source by the final month of the campaign.

Client Investment & ROI

The client invested $2,200 per month in our SEO services, totaling $19,800 over 9 months. During this period, the college’s admissions team recorded 127 additional qualified inquiries per month attributed to organic search by month 9, with an estimated 8% of qualified inquiries converting to enrolled students at an average program value of $14,000.

ROI Breakdown:

  • SEO Investment: $19,800 (9 months)
  • Additional Qualified Inquiries from Organic Traffic: 127/month by month 9 (approximately 650 total over the campaign)
  • Estimated Enrollments Attributed: 22 students
  • Estimated Revenue Attributed: $308,000
  • Return on Investment: 15.6x

Key Insight: For admissions-driven organizations, organic search reduces dependence on rising paid-lead costs while improving inquiry quality — prospective students who find a program page through a specific search tend to be further along in their decision than a cold paid-ad click.
