Data Science Academy SEO Case Study
From 5,600 monthly visitors to 31,000 in 9 months
Project Overview
Our client runs a data science bootcamp offering part-time and full-time career-change programs in data analytics, machine learning, and Python programming, delivered both online and in a hybrid classroom format. They competed directly against much larger, venture-funded bootcamp brands with far bigger content and SEO budgets, along with free platforms like Coursera and YouTube tutorials that dominated informational search results. Paid search costs per enrollment had climbed steadily as competitors outbid each other for the same keywords. The goal of the SEO project was to build organic visibility for program-specific and comparison-style searches, reducing paid acquisition costs while reaching prospective students earlier in their research process.
From the Client
“We were spending more every quarter on ads just to stay visible, and a lot of that traffic was tire-kickers comparing five bootcamps at once. We needed to show up organically for people actually comparing programs, not just outbid everyone for the same expensive keywords.”
The Challenge
The client’s site had 60 pages but almost no content targeting comparison or intent-driven searches like “best data analytics bootcamp” or “data science bootcamp vs certificate.” Only 31 keywords ranked in the top 100, mostly branded terms. Domain Authority was 24, held back by a backlink profile concentrated on a few large press mentions from their launch year. Program pages lacked details prospective students research heavily, like job placement rates, curriculum breakdowns, and financing options. Three larger, better-funded bootcamp competitors dominated page one for nearly every non-branded search in the category.
The Results
- Organic Traffic: 5,600 → 31,000 monthly visitors (5.5x increase)
- Keyword Rankings: 31 keywords in top 100 → 187 keywords in top 10, including first-page rankings for “data analytics bootcamp” and “data science bootcamp with job guarantee”
- Leads from Organic Traffic: 24 enrollment inquiries/month → 156 enrollment inquiries/month
- Domain Authority: 24 → 41
- High-Quality Backlinks: 38 → 129 (from tech publications, alumni-authored guest posts, and career-change resource sites)
The Solution
We built out program pages with the specific details prospective students research before enrolling — job placement rates, curriculum breakdowns, financing options, and instructor credentials — replacing vague marketing copy competitors weren’t providing either.
We created comparison and decision-stage content addressing searches like “bootcamp vs. degree” and “is a data science bootcamp worth it,” capturing prospective students earlier in their research than program pages alone could reach.
We ran a backlink campaign built around alumni success stories, securing guest posts and mentions on tech and career publications that also drove qualified referral traffic from readers already interested in career changes.
Search Engine Optimization Journey
The first three months focused on program page rebuilds and early comparison content, with traffic gains modest as the site built topical depth in a highly competitive category. By month 4, comparison and decision-stage pages began ranking and driving inquiries from prospects earlier in their research. Months 5–9 saw compounding growth as alumni-driven backlinks matured and program pages climbed for competitive non-branded terms, with organic search becoming a meaningfully larger share of total enrollments and reducing dependence on rising paid search costs.
Client Investment & ROI
The client invested $2,800 per month in our SEO services, totaling $25,200 over 9 months. During this period, the academy enrolled 41 additional students directly attributed to organic search by month 9, at an average program value of $8,500 per enrollment.
ROI Breakdown:
- SEO Investment: $25,200 (9 months)
- Additional Enrollment Inquiries from Organic Traffic: 156/month by month 9 (approximately 780 total over the campaign)
- New Students Enrolled from Organic Leads: 41
- Estimated Revenue Attributed: $348,500
- Return on Investment: 13.8x
Key Insight: In a category where paid search costs keep climbing as competitors outbid each other, organic visibility for comparison-stage searches lets a smaller bootcamp compete for prospective students before they’ve narrowed down to the two or three programs they’ll actually request info from.
